Comparing WordPress, Joomla and Drupal

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Joomla, WordPress and Drupal are some of the most famous content management system. All of these are famous for their features and benefits. Considering the advantages offered by these CMS, a majority of website owners are opting for CMS web development. However, when one is spoiled for choice, it is difficult to make a decision. Here is a detailed comparison of the three popular CMS that can help in selecting the right CMS design for a site.

You can build any type of website using any of them. However, each of the CMS has its own limitations and strengths as well. Let us first discuss about WordPress.

There is a common conception floating around WordPress is that it is just for blogging. Is that so? WordPress is an excellent CMS when it comes to creating good websites that allow the owner to put their thoughts on the web easily. Although WordPress is commonly used to create blogs, but it can easily configured to work in many other ways as well. With WordPress, you can create a website for sharing notes, documenting tasks and writing about what was going on. It is much in demand because it is easy to use and install. The comments are already built into the system, as well as pinging services, multiple blogger profiles, trackbacks and more. The user do not have to work on making these systems work as they already work the way that the user would want them to.

However, WordPress cannot be used for everything. When it comes to creating a shopping cart using WordPress, the results are not so satisfactory. This is because WordPress was created to keep people from wanting to customize it to do things that are much more advanced. WordPress is basically designed to be used in a certain way and without modification. Any modification made by the user may cause it to break. This is why some of the WordPress users complain that it is not developer friendly.

Advantages
• It is simple to use and does not require any modification.
• It is excellent for blogging.
• It is quite user friendly and anyone can get the hang of it quickly.

Disadvantages
• It is not developer friendly.
• The upgrades contain some bugs.

Now let’s consider Drupal
If you like to hand code the pages of your content, then Drupal is perfect solution for you. It is an advanced CMS and is developer friendly. Although being developer friendly does not make it user friendly as well. Compared to WordPress and Joomla, there are dozens of tags and functions in Drupal. Every single node has its own set of commands and tags that can be placed elsewhere to manipulate the function of the site. If you are not developer minded, Drupal can be tough to work with.

Advantages
• Developer friendly.
• Has a strong community.
• Can be used to create wonderful websites.

Disadvantages
• Not very user friendly.
• It costs more to publish a Drupal website.

Now Coming to Joomla
Joomla has some amazing capabilities. It is very easy to use as well as customize. It is flexible with code but not as much as Drupal is. Joomla does not have the ability to create multi sites. Understanding Joomla is so easy that it can be taught to anyone.

Advantages
• It is both user and developer friendly
• It has a huge community to assist in website creation.
• It is growing rapidly and improving as well.

Disadvantages
• It is not as powerful as Drupal.
• It can be a bit confusing to use.

Thus it is clear that every CMS has its own pros and cons. In order to decide which CMS to select for the custom CMS development, you should focus on your basic requirements. Select a CMS that suits your requirements in the best way. Always hire a professional and reputed CMS development service to get the best results.
