Optimize your Mobile Website & Increase Visitors

Reading Time: 3 minutes

The Smartphone revolution has significantly influenced the web design basics and today designers and developers are focusing on websites that are mobile-friendly and will help their clients penetrate this ever-growing mobile internet user base. With the booming mobile internet traffic, a technological evolution has gripped the world with respect to mobile website design. A mobile website design could have some categorically distinct basic elements from a traditional web designing. Thus, we need to understand what makes a mobile optimized website design and what basic points one needs to keep in mind while designing a website for the mobile traffic.

Here are 5 essentials of mobile website design that a developer needs to keep in mind:

1. Simplicity of Content Presentation

Smartphones come with excellent features and have some limitations too. For example, Smartphones have a smaller screen size in comparison to a PC. Thus, there is a challenge to present the content in a manner so that audience can enjoy it on their small-screen mobile devices. Thus, landing pages should have clear texts and offer a simple navigation experience to the visitors. In most mobile devices, navigating ‘from up to down’ is simpler than ‘left to right navigation’. It also saves time and is comfortable for the visitors.

2. The Layout

Though layout and content presentation planning should go hand-in-hand, but layout planning needs a significant attention in case of a mobile website, particularly the site has buttons, forms and other elements. Forms should be simple with one-click options. It should have limited input options, because longer forms often irritate a mobile user who is using a smaprtphone with a limited size screen. Buttons should be planned in a manner that should be easier to press by a mobile user.

3. Loading Time

If your site takes a long time to load on a mobile device, it could frustrate the user. Thus, it’s important to keep the number of pages to the minimum and also use a limited number of graphics, buttons etc to allow it to load faster. File sizes should also be kept as low as possible. There are also some conditional loading methods that ensure that a mobile device needs not to download the complete website every time. For this, one may need to compress CSS and JavaScript and there are several types of open-source software, such as UglifyJs, available to compress JS code to create a fast-loading mobile website.

4. OS & Browser Compatibility

Mobile devices come loaded with different operating systems and browsers. A developer needs to see that the website is compatible with all types of mobile operating systems such as Android and iOS. Moreover, compatibility with all older and newer versions of the OS is also important, because many users may be using devices loaded with an old version of a particular OS. In the same manner, websites should be accessible via all types of mobile browsers.

5. Avoid Errors

Mobile internet users are different from PC users and they will land on your website by doing a search on a mobile device. To optimize your site for mobile devices, you need to avoid common errors such as faulty redirects, 404 errors and other errors that could be irritating for a visitor. All applications and functionality on the mobile websites should be working properly. Frequently appearing error may mean that visitors could abandon your website and start searching for a better mobile-optimized website.

A successful mobile website designing starts with a careful planning. A developer needs to understand that mobile users are different from the PC users, and they have their own limitations when it comes to accessing a mobile website through their device. In the nutshell, a mobile website should be fast, responsive, simple and should offer useful content to the visitors in an efficient manner.
