Before coming to the main point, it would be better to have some brief description regarding CSS so that it will be better to learn how to write better CSS code. Well CSS is abbreviated as Cascading Style Sheet. And it is style sheet language and make website’s maintenance easier. Now the question arise that if we have already HTML as markup languages then what was the need of such style sheet languages. HTML was originally designed as a simple way of presenting information and focused on the contents of website but CSS was introduced for the effective presentation of your website. Of course, now that the web has become as popular as it has, the presentation of your content has become almost critical to a site’s success. CSS is the key presentational technology that is used to design websites. From this example it will be more understandable like if you want to change the color of your web page or you want to change the size there comes the need and benefit of CSS. At the whole we can understand it as the most common application is to style web pages written in HTML & XHTML. And it is designed to enable the separation of document content from document presentation like layout, colors, fonts. Now a days, PSD to CSS has become an important part of the web development.

Now we can understand that how important is CSS is for any website. Here we have some tips to write better CSS code.

    1. Use subset of CSS resets to remove default margin and padding from all HTML elements and keep this thing in mind that not to use global reset to remove that because it is slow as well as inefficient way and also you’ll have to define margin and padding for each element that needs it. So this thing keep in mind to write good CSS code.
    2. It might be possible that CSS hacks might be useful to maintain consistent look of the website over older browsers like Internet Explorer6,but they can create problem for newer versions of Internet Explorer as newer versions like Internet Explorer 8 and using hacks can break the layout. support standard of CSS to a good level.. Do not go for any specific version of Internet Explorer,I must say you that use the conditional statements and go with that. So the main thing is use the version of browser according to situation.

    1. For your ID and classes us those names which have some meaning .Suppose you are defining your sidebar styles using class leftbox and after some redesign, you take it to right, then how it looks? Would it be meaningful to have leftbox as name for right box. There should be some thought before naming classes and IDs for elements so that they could sound meaningful and easy to understand later.
    2. Always use same style in multiple child elements of a parent element on your web page, then it will be better to define them for their parent element and then CSS inheritance will do all the work and You’ll be able to easily update your code later and also it’ll also reduce the CSS file size.
    3. If all the CSS selectors have common style then you can combine them to save you time and space.
    4. To reduce file size use the shorthand properties of CSS so that it can quickly write CSS code. These shorthand notation can be used for margin, padding, border, font, background and also for color values.
    5. Organize your code in certain pattern so that if you find them later then you can easily get them. That will save a lot of time. To convert PSD to HTML/XHTML/CSS is indeed very tiring and time consuming task. So, it is always that you may hire a markup service provider
    6. To find and update a style declaration later write readable CSS. Either group all styles for a selector in one line or each style in its own line. You can also combine these two techniques together.
    7. To separate different section of CSS code use proper comments.
    8. Keep CSS property in alphabetical order. This is little tough but makes your easier for future.
    9. Use external style sheet to place your CSS code to update your styles later at one place instead of looking into HTML templates or files for styles.
    10. It is better to split your CSS files into multiple files if you are working on a large web project that has multiple modules with different set of styles and looks. You can separate style-sheets like, one for reset, one for layout, one for generic classes and one for module specific styles.
    11. Use CSS compressor and compress your CSS code once you are ready to deploy the web design project,that will reduce size of file and also will improve loading time of web-page.
    12. Choose a particular way of organizing and formatting your CSS code and stick to that way for all your project when you are working on multiple projects.

PSD to XHTML and CSS is very skillful task and hence require specialized efforts to perform it accurately. This should be followed by proper validation.
