6 Mistakes to be Avoided in Mobile Usability

Reading Time: 3 minutes

With advance in technology, a number of mobile applications have come up. These mobile applications provide users with an alternate means of accessing your web page, as well as keeping connected anywhere and at anytime. The programs contained in these applications are an integral part of staying competitive within market. This is why they should be created wisely.

Generally people make some grave mistakes while using these mobile applications. Read further and you will find out how to avoid the top 6 mistakes that impact your mobile usability.

1. Do not think of the mobile as a mini computer: If you consider the mobile device as a tiny computer as it is incorporated with various applications, you are doing a big mistake. The idea that content can simply be shrunk to size is a very dangerous one. Mobile applications require major design alterations. It is very much possible that fonts and colors may need to be re-adjusted for legibility; contrasts and resolutions may need to be sharpened; complicated design features may need to be dropped or heavily altered; and information may need to be shifted around so that the most important elements can be viewed together.

2. Do not neglect understanding your audience:This is one of the reasons why most of the mobile applications seem out of touch with how they are being used in real life. Mobile usability depends on programs being built for “on the go” situations. Mobile applications need to be designed accordingly. They should be incorporated with fast short-cuts that enable users to access their desired information as quickly as possible. Mobile devices are not meant for extensive browsing and complicated searches. It is extremely important to understand the audience’s goal for developing the application.

3. Do not offer too much at once: All the information should be thoughtfully divided up so that each page is kept organized and easily navigable. The amount of options you want to offer should be carefully selected. They should then be prioritized within the web page design. Homepage links should be created to guide visitors through the application. They allow the users to skip ahead directly to the information they wish to seek.

4. Do not fail to make choices: Editing is very important not just in terms of mobile content, but also in terms of media features, such as photos, video, or a digital portfolio. Since applications can take longer to load on mobile devices than they do on regular computers, so it is better to keep things simple. You would not want a user going elsewhere in frustration. Do not bombard applications with text heavy pages. Do not make visitors look around for the information they need.

5. Do not be unfamiliar with the type of device you are designing for: Not all mobile devices work the same way. If you assume that a single application will be compatible with all types is a big mistake. It is necessary to choose the type of device you are creating your application for and to research well its functions. Also study the pros and cons to find out which would be the best way to present information and optimize your site for this specific mobile device.

6. Do not forget to test it out: You must create prototypes and run test groups to ensure successful mobile usability. If you skip this last stage, it would defeat the very purpose of developing a good mobile application. Try to get feedback and make adjustments accordingly. Once the program is available, it will be much harder to back-track, so make sure that you would not have to.
