How Commercial, Customized and Open Source CMS are different?
Reading Time: 3 minutes

Content Management is considered to be a revolution in the world of web design and development industry. It has proved to be a boon for non-geeks. It has broaden the scope of having control over the customization of the design and content for their websites/blogs. It has reduced the dependency on the designers and developers for minor updates. Leaving a website untouched after making it, is of no use. Website maintenance is very important and a critical factor in the success of any website. A constant flow adds freshness whereas stagnation leads to the downfall. So, it is indispensable that you add fresh content to your site in order to maintain your search ranking results and do little little modifications as per the trend goes. All of this is now very easy with CMS.

How the trend went about?

Sometime back, after CMS became the need for almost all web developers, business people and others.  If a client wanted content management and didn’t have the budget for a Commercial CMS, developers could just sell the client a “maintenance package,” which meant that an HTML coder would make site changes manually at regular intervals. That was the time and today is the time, when nobody wants to compromise on this issue.

Now, CMS has become the inseparable part of web development industry. As the demand rose, the need for the availability of different CMS tools automatically came into being. There is a choice between commercial, open and customized CMS depending upon the business requirements and budget.  Now many commercial CMS applications are available at reasonable costs whereas, there are several options of open source CMS such as, WordPress, Joomla!, Drupal and so on. Apart from commercial CMS, we have other CMS types:

Custom CMS: This is the content management system designed to meet your specific requirements. If the needs of your site or your users are very specialized then, a custom content management solution might be the right choice.

Open Source CMS: If your content management needs are more flexible then, you need an automized open source CMS rather than a customized one. For example: WordPress, Drupal, Joomla! and many others.

Parameters on which the three are differentiated:

Commercial CMS features:

  1. With this comes many advantages like commercial support and well-defined service level agreements.
  2. Documentation and training for commercial CMS  is usually more rigorous than for any open source CMS.
  3. If you or your client has the resources to purchase and appropriately license a tool, it can often be the safest deal of ever.
  4. This CMS may already have ready built applications to work for you, so would like to be implemented fast than others.
  5. Commercial CMS license is expensive than other CMS. Customization and integration expenses can even increase the cost.

Custom CMS features:

  1. Since, it is meant to meet the specific needs of your business, so it delivers you full control over aesthetics, functionalities, architecture, and flow.
  2. It is considered to be superior to standard or run-of-the-mill e-commerce applications.
  3. Flexibility: It provides you complete flexibility in selecting the technology, hosting services and security protocols.
  4. It provides seamless integration with your business process.
  5. Customized CMS introduces the added concerns of taxing internal development resources, which can further increase implementation times and introduce large product support demands on your development team.
  6. The more you spend, the more you can make it customizable for yourself.

Open Source CMS features:

  1. The cost is reduced with open source CMS during e-commerce shop development. An open source CMS will be significantly cheaper than a commercial CMS.
  2. It is tried, tested and verified across thousands of deployments proven over years of development.
  3. As with many open source programs, because the code is “open,” the opportunities for customization are also greater than they are for a commercial CMS.
  4. It allows for quick deployment and therefore, reduced responding time to the market.
  5. Product support, documentation, and user training are often subject to the whims of volunteer developers.
  6. Enterprise-level workflow management may therefore, be difficult to achieve. Therefore, the product implementation can take a long than the other commercial CMS products.

The Climax of the story goes like this….

It depends upon number of factors that which CMS you need to opt for. The main objective behind deploying any of the above CMS is to increase the ROI of the business. CMS has really proved beneficial in a way that it has come down to your requirements, resources, budget and the demands of the situation. Some of the very expensive CMS looks fantastic, but you need not to get attracted by those fancy and complex CMS, just select the one which suits the best for your business.
