The WordPress project team has always wanted to run WordPress on common server configurations so that the users can have flexibility of choosing their host. Now WordPress is running pretty well on almost all web hosting platforms. The project team has revaluated some of the requirements for running WordPress. Now they announce the end of the support for PHP 4 and MySQL 4!
WordPress developers must have been worried reading this statement. To shed off the confusion, it has become important to mention that WordPress 3.1, due in late 2010, will be the last version of WordPress to support PHP 4. Well… not just this! WordPress 3.2, due in the first half of 2011, would be raising the minimum required PHP version to 5.2. But why specifically version 5.2? Because this is what the majority of WordPress users are using and has offered significant scope of improvements in the course of time. It is also the minimum PHP version that the Drupal and Joomla! projects will be supporting in their next versions, both due in this year.
This move of WordPress has been strongly favored by large users base because only around 11 percent of WordPress installations are running on a PHP version below 5.2. The percentage is supposed to go down because hosting providers would soon realize that to support the newest versions of WordPress (or Drupal, or Joomla!), they have to break the old conventions. After the arrival of WP 3.0, WordPress website design is in trend these days. The project team is trying to incorporate better technology so as to provide users a better experience with WordPress.
Adding to the surprise, WordPress project team is also going to drop support for MySQL 4 after WordPress 3.1 as only 6 percent of WordPress users are running MySQL 4. Now the new required version for MySQL for WP 3.1 would be 5.0.15. WP users would not be able to upgrade to newer versions if their hosting providers do not meet the standards as mentioned above.
