What we do

PixelCrayons builds custom Shopify themes, apps and Plus stores, and handles Shopify migrations. A senior Shopify team builds lean themes and apps that keep orders and stock in sync. We also move stores to Shopify with zero data loss. We work directly for brands, and white-label (under your brand) for agencies.

Fit check

Is Shopify
right for you?

Right for you if
  • You sell direct to shoppers and want a platform that handles hosting, security and card-payment rules for you
  • You want a small team to run a serious store
  • You're on Shopify Plus and want to use what you pay for: custom checkout, B2B pricing, automation
Not the right fit if
  • Your catalogue is heavy B2B with complex, negotiated pricing (Magento often fits better)
  • You're content-led and want the store and the content living in one system (a content-led platform may suit better)
  • You sell at high volume on a standard plan, where Shopify's transaction fees need a close look

In every build

What a Shopify build
actually includes.

01

Custom themes your team can edit

We build custom themes section by section in Liquid (Shopify's theme language). Your team can edit content, change product displays and launch campaigns without waiting for a developer. There's no bought template with fifty unused options, and no page builder slowing every page. The theme does what your store needs, and does it quickly.

Every build
02

Fewer apps, with your systems connected

Every app you install adds a monthly fee and extra code to your pages. We check what the store needs and replace any app that a few lines of theme code can do. We build custom apps where ready-made ones don't fit. We connect your stock and finance system (ERP), fulfilment, subscriptions and email, so orders and stock match everywhere.

Every build
03

Shopify Plus, used properly

On Shopify Plus, we build the features you pay for. That means a custom checkout, B2B price lists and company accounts, and stores for several countries. It also means automation with Shopify Functions and Flow. If you pay for Plus but use it like a starter plan, we'll raise that first.

On Plus
04

Speed checked on every release

Shopify stores get slow one app and one section at a time. We set limits for scripts and images on each template. We measure Core Web Vitals (Google's speed scores) on every release, and a release that fails them doesn't go live. If your store is already slow, our Performance service fixes it as a separate project.

Every release
05

Moves to Shopify, planned first

Moving from Magento or an older platform? We list every product, customer, order and ranking page, and map each one before anything switches. Nothing is turned off until its new home is checked. That's how you keep your search rankings through the move.

When replatforming
How it starts

NDA to a
live preview.

01
Start

Brief and a call

We sign an NDA and review your store together. We look at the theme, your apps, any Plus features and what's holding up your next launch. There's no charge for this stage.

02
Once the brief is complete

Itemised proposal

We confirm the date your proposal arrives. It lists what ships (sections, apps, integrations, migration plan), in what order and for how much.

03
Your decision

You sign off

We start after you confirm scope, payment and access to your store.

04
Typically 2 to 3 business days later

The team starts

Shopify engineers set up version control for the theme in your accounts, plus preview themes for testing. They map any migration before a single record moves.

05
On the date in your proposal

First deliverable

We show you working software on a preview theme, on a call. It might be a rebuilt section, a custom app on a test store or a practice run of the migration. The build then runs in fixed blocks, each ending in a demo.

Inside Prism

Your engagement, week to week,
in one workspace.

Prism is the client workspace where your requests, approvals, tasks and weekly reviews live.

Some engagements include Prism, our client workspace, and your proposal says whether yours does. Where it does, your build runs in a workspace you log into: requests, approvals, the task list and the weekly review, beside the repository your team already owns.

  • 01

    Requests and approvals

One queue, beside the repository your team owns.

  • 02

    Owned tasks

Every task has one owner and a date.

  • 03

    Weekly review

Each decision recorded, with the expectation attached.

How we report it, in Prism

The store readiness checklist,
before launch day.

What you receive in month one

A commerce build is reported against a launch checklist agreed before the build starts. In the first month you receive the catalogue and data audit with every field mapped, the integration map covering payments, shipping, tax and stock, and the checkout test plan with the orders that must complete before go-live. The weekly review in Prism tracks the checklist, not the mood in the room.

  • 01Catalogue and data audit: products, variants, customers and orders, field by field
  • 02Integration map: payments, shipping, tax, stock and email, with owners
  • 03Checkout test plan: the orders, payment types and edge cases that must pass
  • 04Performance budget: page weight and response targets for key templates
  • 05Launch checklist: what must be true on the day, and who signs each line

Questions

Frequently
asked.

For most brands that sell direct to shoppers, yes. Shopify handles hosting, security and card-payment compliance (PCI), so a small team can run a serious store. Large B2B catalogues with complex pricing can suit Magento better. Stores built around content may suit a content-led platform. At high sales volume, check the transaction fees closely. If Shopify isn't right, our eCommerce team covers the other options.

Yes. Before anything switches, we map every product, variant, customer, past order and ranking page to its place on Shopify. Redirects go live with the launch. Nothing is switched off until the move is checked. The commerce case on this page was a migration but not a Shopify build, and it followed the same steps.

It depends on the project. Theme work takes weeks. A full platform move with ERP integration takes months. Once we have a complete brief, we confirm when your itemised proposal arrives. Eligible work can typically start two to three business days after scope, payment and access are confirmed.

Your materials, data and accounts remain yours; agreed rights in bespoke work transfer under the engagement terms and payment, and third-party software keeps its licence. The Shopify platform itself is subscription software from Shopify. We hand over documents and logins as we go, so any capable Shopify team could take over the store.

Every release passes QA. Theme checks and automated tests run first, then testers check by hand across browsers and devices. We test the checkout from basket to confirmation. That covers payments, shipping, taxes, discounts, failed payments and out-of-stock items. Bugs are fixed and retested before the demo, so you review a preview theme that works.

Yes. Much of our Shopify work goes out under partner agencies' brands. You keep the tools and client calls, and our engineers work behind the scenes. It's covered by an NDA. We don't approach the clients you introduce to us for direct business, through the work and for twelve months after the last assignment for that client ends, and it's written into the agreement.
