What we do

PixelCrayons is a custom web development company, building websites and web applications from brief to deployment. We agree the technical plan, IP and ownership before work starts. We build the front and back end to agreed speed and accessibility targets. A senior engineer reviews every change. We work direct for brands and white-label for agencies.

  1. Discovery and architecture, before any codeA plain-English plan for your data, hosting, connected systems and page delivery, before any code.
  2. A senior build, with every change reviewedEngineers who use your technology every week, with every change checked by a second senior engineer.
  3. Testing during each sprint, with bugs fixed straight awayAutomated checks on every change and testing on many devices before each demo, with bugs fixed in the same sprint.

In every web build

What every custom web build
includes.

01

Discovery and architecture, before any code

Every build starts with the decisions that are costly to undo. The data model: how your information is organised. Hosting: where the site runs and what that costs. Integrations: which systems it must talk to. And how pages are served: prebuilt, on request, or a mix. You get a plain-English note on what we recommend, why, and the trade-offs. You help choose the technology instead of inheriting it.

Sprint zero
02

A senior build, with every change reviewed

Engineers who work with your technology every week write the front end and back end. Nothing goes in until a second senior engineer approves it against a written standard. These reviews keep the code consistent as it grows. The code you inherit reads as if one careful author wrote it.

Every merge
03

Testing during each sprint, with bugs fixed straight away

Automated checks run on every change. A QA engineer also tests each feature across browsers and devices before each demo. Bugs found during a sprint are fixed in that sprint. You see working software at every demo, and the bug list never grows into a second to-do list.

Every sprint
04

Performance and accessibility budgets

We agree load-time and accessibility targets in writing before the first sprint. We measure them on every release, on slow connections and everyday phones. If a feature would break a target, we bring you the choice first. You never find a slow page by surprise later.

Every release
05

Documentation, handover and your IP

The code lives in your accounts from day one. Bespoke deliverable rights, licences and handover are agreed before work starts. We keep the technical notes, set-up guides and release steps up to date as we build. Your own team, or any future supplier, can take the build over without digging. You are never tied to us.

In writing
How it starts

How a custom web build starts,
step by step.

01
Start

Brief and a call

We sign an NDA. Then we talk through your goals, existing code, connected systems, limits and who will look after the build after launch.

02
Once the brief is complete

Itemised proposal

We confirm the date your proposal arrives. It itemises the scope and price, with the recommended architecture and the reasoning behind it.

03
Your decision

You sign off

You confirm the scope, the payment and the access we need. Nothing starts before this.

04
Typically 2 to 3 business days later

The team starts

We settle the data model and how the parts connect, and put the speed targets in writing. The code and automated checks are set up in your accounts, and we plan sprint one with you.

05
On the date in your proposal

First deliverable

The first feature on staging, reviewed, tested and demoed on a call. The sprint rhythm runs from here.

Inside Prism

Your engagement, week to week,
in one workspace.

Prism is the client workspace where your requests, approvals, tasks and weekly reviews live.

Some engagements include Prism, our client workspace, and your proposal says whether yours does. Where it does, your build runs in a workspace you log into: requests, approvals, the task list and the weekly review, beside the repository your team already owns.

  • 01

    Requests and approvals

One queue, beside the repository your team owns.

  • 02

    Owned tasks

Every task has one owner and a date.

  • 03

    Weekly review

Each decision recorded, with the expectation attached.

We worked with PixelCrayons for around three years, with their developers becoming a genuine extension of our team. Having consistent developers who understood the work and could stay with us over the long term made a real difference to continuity and delivery.

Building a store instead?

This page covers custom websites and web applications. If you are building an online shop, see eCommerce development (catalogue, checkout, payments). To grow your own team instead, hire full-stack developers who build a feature from database to browser.

Questions

Frequently
asked.

We choose it from your needs, not our habits. We look at what your team can maintain, what you already run, your hosting and who you can hire. Our default is proven and easy to staff: TypeScript with React, Next.js and Node. Where a content system fits, we use PHP with Laravel or WordPress. If a ready-made platform would serve you better, we say so first.

Your materials, data and accounts remain yours. Agreed ownership rights in bespoke deliverables transfer under the engagement terms and applicable payment; third-party software and assets keep their licences. We do not withhold customer-owned data or accounts over a payment dispute. Where the build uses open-source libraries, their standard licences are documented in the handover notes.

Yes. Most builds move onto a monthly maintenance plan. It covers software and security updates, monitoring, small features and speed checks against the original targets. The build is documented and the accounts are yours. So you can hand it to an in-house team or another supplier at any time. We want you to stay because we respond well, not because you're locked in.

It depends on the scope, the connected systems and how much custom logic you need. Timelines go in the proposal. Once we have a complete brief, we confirm when your proposal arrives. A content site takes weeks; a complex web application takes months. If a date is at risk, you hear it from us early.

Yes, it's one of the most common ways we work. We can send code changes into your repository under your review rules. Or we can lead the build while your engineers review our work. In week one we write down how we handle code branches, reviews, releases and shared working hours. We keep the documentation up to date as we go.

Yes. Many agencies use us as their web app development company, with builds delivered under their brand. You keep your project tools and your client calls; our engineers work behind the scenes. We don't approach clients you introduce for direct business, during the work or for twelve months after the last assignment for that client ends, and that's written into the agreement.

The range

What it costs,
at the direct rate.

Priced per build against an itemised scope. Choose a discovery sprint to settle the technical plan before the budget, a fixed-quote build, or a retainer for the years after launch. If both the front end and the back end are custom, the quote adds those two rows together.

  • One-offDiscovery and architecture sprint$950–$3,750one-time
  • ProjectCustom website or web application$3,750–$37.5Kfixed quote, one-time
  • RetainerEngineering retainer$1,250–$7,500per month

Start with the architecture,
not with a guess.

Tell us what you're building. Once we have a complete brief, we confirm the date you will receive your itemised proposal (stack, team and timeline, with the reasoning).
