Shine Electronics:
an operations platform, extended and modernised while it ran.

Shine buys back, refurbishes and redistributes used mobile devices and electronics. Our developers worked as an extension of its team on the internal platform that runs its finance, production and inventory, adding modules and integrations and moving the code from Core PHP to Laravel without taking it offline.

About the client

Shine Electronics
Electronics Refurbishment · Reverse Logistics

Shine Electronics is a New York company that buys back, refurbishes and redistributes used mobile devices and other electronics, working with the trade-in programmes of US telecommunications carriers and selling to markets around the world.

Its daily operations, from finance to the production floor, run on one internal application. That application had to keep running while it was extended and modernised.

The challenge

What had to change

  • 01An existing Core PHP application needed modernising to Laravel without a rebuild, while the business used it every day.
  • 02Accounts receivable and payable, sales and expense reporting, and profit and loss by business line and product margin needed to run from the platform, not from separate spreadsheets.
  • 03Quality control, repair, polish, receiving and shipping, and phone and parts inventory, needed screens of their own.
  • 04Device data checks and wipes, and accounting entries, needed automated integrations instead of repeated manual entry.
What we delivered

The solution

Support for the live platform

Solution

Support and maintenance of the existing Core PHP application, with updates and fixes, so the system the business relied on stayed dependable while new work was layered on.

Core PHP to Laravel, in place

Solution

A gradual migration that ran Laravel alongside Core PHP inside one application, using a domain and subdomain set-up with sessions shared across them, so the platform stayed live throughout.

Finance in the platform

Solution

Accounts receivable and payable, sales and expense reporting, and profit and loss by business line, monthly plan and product margin.

Production and inventory

Solution

Screens for each production stage (quality control, repair, polish, receiving and shipping), carrier and OEM dashboards, and phone and parts inventory.

Device checks and accounting, automated

Solution

An integration with GreenT for device data checks and wipes before resale, and a QuickBooks integration that keeps the accounts in step, both run as scheduled jobs.

Exhibit

How the platform is built,
layer by layer.

Finance, production, inventory and integrations sit as separate modules on one application, so each can change without disturbing the others.

  1. Layer 1Front endSees: HTML and CSS

The browser screens the finance team and the production floor use every day.

  2. Layer 2ApplicationSees: Core PHP and Laravel

Both frameworks in one application during the migration, linked by shared sessions across domain and subdomain.

  3. Layer 3DataSees: MySQL

One system of record for finance, production and inventory.

  4. Layer 4IntegrationsSees: GreenT and QuickBooks

Device data checks and wipes, and accounting entries, run as scheduled jobs.

The results

One internal platform for finance, production and inventory

Core PHP and Laravel running side by side during the migration, with the platform live throughout

Device checks and accounting handled through integrations instead of manual entry

Modules built so each can be extended or migrated on its own

Lessons

What other teams can take from this

Modernise without a big bang

Running the new framework beside the old one lets a business keep working while its software changes underneath it.

Bring the spreadsheets into the system

Reporting kept beside a platform drifts away from it. Built into the platform, everyone works from one version.

Automate the steps that go wrong

Device wipes and accounting entries are exactly where manual work slips. They are the first things worth automating.
