Magento to Shopify migration · Gold Coast, Australia
Bean Bags R Us:
an Australian bean bag store, moved from Magento to Shopify.
Bean Bags R Us is an Australian-owned bean bag retailer that sells to homes and to commercial clients. Its store ran on Magento 2, on a server the business had to keep running itself. We moved it to Shopify: products, customers and orders, a custom theme, its apps and payments, and redirects from the old addresses.

Bean Bags R Us
Furniture & Homeware · Bean Bags
Bean Bags R Us is an Australian-owned bean bag retailer that started on the Gold Coast in 2011. It sells more than 300 styles, from bean bag chairs, lounges and ottomans to outdoor, pool, kids and dog bean bags, to homes and to commercial clients such as resorts, schools and events.
Its store ran on Magento 2, on a server the business had to keep patched and running itself. In 2024 we moved it to hosted Shopify. The store has been redesigned since; the screens on this page show it as it runs on Shopify today.
What had to change
- 01The Magento 2 store ran on a self-managed server (Apache, MySQL, Elasticsearch and Redis) that had to be patched, cached and debugged by hand.
- 02Products, collections, customer records and order history all had to arrive on Shopify intact.
- 03A range sold to homes and to commercial clients had to be rebuilt as Shopify collections.
- 04Customers who paid by PayPal had to find it on the new store, beside newer ways to pay.
- 05Search rankings built on the Magento addresses had to survive the change of platform.
The solution
A stable source before the move
The Magento 2 production and staging servers were set up and debugged first, so the old store was stable and could be reproduced before any data moved: missing database tables restored, view definers corrected and the cache changed so the navigation worked.
Products, customers and orders, migrated
Products, collections and categories, customer records and order history moved from Magento to Shopify, then were checked after import.
A custom Shopify theme
A Liquid theme built for the store: header and footer, home page, collection and product pages, a cart drawer, account pages, the blog and the information pages.
The range, rebuilt as collections
Chairs, lounges, ottomans, large, outdoor, pet and pool bean bags as retail collections, alongside the commercial ranges: branded, designer, resort and school bean bags.
Apps and payments
Shopify apps for third-party logistics, email and SMS, chat, reviews, SEO, shipment tracking, currency, geolocation, product feeds for Google, TikTok and Facebook, and pre-orders. At checkout: Stripe, Google Pay, Apple Pay, Afterpay, bank transfer and PayPal.
Search rankings carried across
301 redirects from the old Magento addresses, with page titles and descriptions carried over, so search engines and old links reach the new pages.
A cutover tested first
Two staging environments, one for the Magento store and one for the new Shopify store, so the move was tested before the live store changed platform.

The moments
we engineered
Pieces of the brief, caught mid-use on the live site.

Each range, its own collection
The ranges were rebuilt as Shopify collections in the move. Each, from bean bag chairs to dog bean bags, opens onto a collection that can be filtered and sorted.

From colour to checkout
Colour, quantity and the way to pay sit in one column beside the gallery; the checkout behind them takes the payment methods set up in the move.
At four times
screen resolution
The craft is in the small things: spacing, type, the weight of a button.

Every range in one row
Chairs, kids, outdoor, pool, lounges, large, ottomans and dog bean bags sit under the search bar, with the currency beside it.

Choose, then pay
Ten colours, a quantity and three ways forward: the cart, buying at once or going straight to checkout.

The choice before the click
Rating, price and colours show on the card, before the product page opens.

Technology
- Shopify, with a custom Liquid theme
- Source platform: Magento 2 on PHP, MySQL, Elasticsearch and Redis
- Data migration: products, collections, customers and orders
- Payments: Stripe, Google Pay, Apple Pay, Afterpay, bank transfer and PayPal
- Shopify apps for logistics, email and SMS, chat, reviews, SEO, tracking, currency and product feeds
- 301 redirects from the Magento URLs
The results
The store on hosted Shopify, so the Magento server is no longer the business's to maintain
Products, collections, customers and order history migrated from Magento
A custom Liquid theme, with the retail and commercial ranges rebuilt as collections
PayPal kept at checkout, beside Stripe, Google Pay, Apple Pay, Afterpay and bank transfer
301 redirects from the old Magento addresses, so links and search engines reach the new pages
What other teams can take from this
Fix the source before you move it
A migration copies the old store as it is. Repairing the Magento servers and database first meant the data that reached Shopify was the data the business meant to keep.
Keep the way customers already pay
PayPal stayed at checkout beside the newer options, so a returning customer found the method they knew.
Redirects are part of the build
Each old address needs somewhere to go, or the move throws away the links and rankings the store had already earned.
Why PixelCrayons
- Shopify migrations by our own commerce team, from the old platform's servers to the new store's checkout.
- Data, theme, apps, payments and redirects handled as one move, not five handovers.
- A cutover tested on staging before the live store changed platform.
