Select Specs:
an eyewear store built for prescriptions, not just products.

Select Specs is a UK online retailer of prescription glasses, sunglasses and contact lenses. We built its eCommerce platform and supported its development and ongoing improvements: product and catalogue functionality, prescription and lens selection, integrations and technical fixes.

About the client

Select Specs
Eyewear · eCommerce

Select Specs is a family-run UK optician selling prescription glasses, sunglasses and contact lenses online, with its own laboratory and a high street store in Westgate-on-Sea, Kent.

A pair of glasses is bought with a prescription and a choice of lenses as well as a frame, so the store has to handle far more than a basket of products. We built the original platform; others may have worked on the store since, so this page describes only the work the client names.

The challenge

What had to change

  • 01A large catalogue of frames by collection, shape and brand had to be easy to browse.
  • 02Every pair of glasses needed a prescription and a choice of lenses before checkout.
  • 03The platform had to connect to the services behind it.
  • 04The customer experience had to keep running smoothly while the store kept changing.
What we delivered

The solution

The eCommerce platform

Solution

We built Select Specs' eCommerce platform, then supported both its development and its ongoing improvements.

Product and catalogue functionality

Solution

Work on how frames are listed, grouped and presented across the catalogue, from collections to individual products.

Prescription and lens selection

Solution

Work on the steps where a customer adds a prescription and chooses lenses for the frame, the part of the order that makes glasses different from any other product.

Integrations and technical fixes

Solution

Integrations between the store and the services it relies on, and the technical fixes that keep the customer experience running smoothly.

Lens choice, explained

Every pair is a frame and a lens choice. The lens guide sets out the lenses a customer chooses between when they add a prescription.

Lessons

What other teams can take from this

Prescription retail is configuration

A pair of glasses is a frame, a prescription and a lens choice. The platform has to treat all three as one order.

Improvement never stops

A store that sells online for years needs a team for the next fix, not just the launch.

Integrations are part of the experience

Customers never see them, but they notice the moment one fails.
