What we do

PixelCrayons builds and rescues WordPress sites: custom themes, bespoke plugins, performance, security and WooCommerce. A senior team writes custom code instead of stacking plugins. We build an editing setup your team will actually use. We agree IP and ownership terms before work starts. We work directly for brands, and white-label (under your brand) for agencies.

  1. Custom themes without heavy page buildersA custom theme with blocks your editors understand and templates that load only what they use.
  2. Custom plugins we write ourselvesCustom features written as documented plugins that survive updates, and every other plugin checked.
  3. Speed checked on every releaseCaching, images, a clean database and lean scripts, measured on every release.
Fit check

Is WordPress
still the right call?

Right for you if
  • You run a content or marketing site, and your editors want to publish without a developer
  • You want clear IP and ownership terms agreed before work starts
  • You've inherited a slow site with too many plugins: most can be fixed without a rebuild
Not the right fit if
  • You're building a complex web app rather than a content site
  • Nobody on your team will commit to ongoing maintenance, patching and backups
  • The site already carries a page builder and forty plugins, and nobody is checking what's needed

In every engagement

What a WordPress build
actually includes.

01

Custom themes without heavy page builders

We build a custom theme around the kinds of content you publish. Your editors get custom blocks they understand, and templates load only what they use. There's no page builder making every page heavy and every redesign a rebuild. Your team can edit with confidence. The code stays clean for search engines and screen readers alike.

Every build
02

Custom plugins we write ourselves

When a feature is custom, we write the plugin ourselves. It's clean, documented and update-safe: it won't break when WordPress updates. We don't bolt three ready-made plugins together and hope their next updates agree. We check every plugin left. Each must be maintained, needed and worth the code it adds.

Every build
03

Speed checked on every release

We set up caching, optimise images, keep the database clean and limit scripts. We measure the results against Core Web Vitals (Google's speed scores) on every release. We don't just promise speed in a proposal. WordPress can be quick when it isn't carrying a page builder and forty plugins. Getting there is normal engineering work.

Every release
04

Security and steady maintenance

We lock down logins and give each user only the access they need. Updates are tested first. Backups run automatically and are stored off-site, and we test that they restore. WordPress is popular, so attackers target it, and unpatched plugins are the usual way in. Our maintenance retainers keep WordPress, the theme and plugins up to date. Someone on our side is responsible when an urgent patch matters at 2 a.m.

Rescues of sites others built

Inherited a slow, fragile site with plugins nobody dares touch? We check what's actually running and replace the bloat with lean code. We fix what's broken and write down what we did. We only rebuild from scratch when the audit shows it's cheaper. Most rescues fix the existing site rather than replace it.

On rescue
How it starts

From NDA to working software,
step by step.

01
Start

Brief and a call

We sign an NDA and go through the site together. We look at the theme, plugins, hosting and what's slow or fragile today. There's no charge for this stage.

02
Once the brief is complete

Itemised proposal

We confirm the date your proposal arrives. It lists what ships (theme work, plugins, security, hosting moves), in what order and for how much.

03
Your decision

You sign off

You confirm the scope, the payment and the access we need. Nothing starts before this.

04
Typically 2 to 3 business days later

The team starts

WordPress engineers set up version control for the theme in your accounts, plus a test site. They check there's a safe way to release changes.

05
On the date in your proposal

First deliverable

We show you working software on the test site, on a call. It might be a rebuilt template or a custom plugin. Then work runs in fixed blocks, each ending in a demo.

Inside Prism

Your engagement, week to week,
in one workspace.

Prism is the client workspace where your requests, approvals, tasks and weekly reviews live.

Some engagements include Prism, our client workspace, and your proposal says whether yours does. Where it does, your build runs in a workspace you log into: requests, approvals, the task list and the weekly review, beside the repository your team already owns.

  • 01

    Requests and approvals

One queue, beside the repository your team owns.

  • 02

    Owned tasks

Every task has one owner and a date.

  • 03

    Weekly review

Each decision recorded, with the expectation attached.

How we report it, in Prism

The delivery record,
you can read without a stand-up.

What you receive in month one

Development is reported as artefacts in your own tools, not a status call. In the first month you receive the technical audit of the current codebase, the delivery plan broken into reviewed increments with acceptance criteria, and the environment map showing where code runs and who can deploy it. The weekly review in Prism lists what merged, what was reviewed, and what is blocked and by whom.

  • 01Technical audit: the current codebase, its risks, and the order of fixes
  • 02Delivery plan: increments with acceptance criteria and review owners
  • 03Environment map: development, staging and production, and who deploys
  • 04Weekly review in Prism: merged, in review, blocked, and the reason for each block
  • 05Definition of done: tests, review, accessibility and performance checks per increment

Help your new WordPress site rank.

WordPress has its own SEO problems. Plugins make duplicate pages, code gets bloated and some pages trap search engines. It also has its own quick wins. Our WordPress SEO service is built around them, and it can run on the same plan as the build.

Questions

Frequently
asked.

Yes for many projects, no for some. WordPress is excellent for content sites and marketing sites. It suits editorial teams who want to publish without a developer. Built lean and looked after properly, it's fast and secure. For complex web apps it's the wrong tool, and we'll point you to our web development team.

Yes. We check what's running. We see which plugins are worth keeping, what the page builder costs you and where hosting slows you down. Then we replace the bloat with lean custom code, tighten security and set up real backups. Your content stays intact. We only suggest a rebuild when the audit shows fixing would cost more.

It depends on the project. A custom theme, a rescue and a WooCommerce build are each scoped on their own. Once we have a complete brief, we confirm when your proposal arrives. A focused custom theme takes weeks. Larger builds with migrations and integrations take longer. If a date is at risk, we tell you early.

Your materials, data and accounts remain yours. Agreed ownership rights in bespoke deliverables transfer under the engagement terms and applicable payment; third-party software and assets keep their licences. We don't withhold customer-owned data or accounts over a payment dispute, and documentation and credentials are handed over as we go.

Every release passes QA. Automated checks run, and testers check by hand across browsers and devices. Nothing goes live without a test on the test site first. After launch, our maintenance retainers test WordPress, theme and plugin updates on the test site. Automatic off-site backups and a practised restore process back this up.

Yes. WordPress is one of the most common services agencies hand us. You keep the tools and client calls, and our engineers work behind the scenes. It's covered by an NDA. We don't approach the clients you introduce to us for direct business, through the work and for twelve months after the last assignment for that client ends, and it's written into the agreement.
